What's new with Pictorial Planet?

There are big changes underway here at Pictorial Planet and I’m so glad I can now let the cat out of the bag!
What is going on?

In 2005 I moved to America and published my website Pictorial Planet together with my book “The Art of Black and White Developing”. Since then, I’ve received many emails from readers of my book. I’ve enjoyed answering questions and providing solutions. Now it’s time to do more.

In 2017, my wife and I began our move back to UK. It was a Herculean effort, but we are now over the hump and back on the other side of the pond. I closed my event photography business in the USA, left my corporate Instructional Design job, and packed up a ton of gear. Of everything we shipped to UK, a quarter - two pallets worth - was photographic gear and darkroom equipment. (My wife likes frequently to remind me of this!) We are looking forward to moving into our new home, a nineteenth century Scottish farmhouse, in October. Till then, I’m photographing around the UK with all my favourite films!

I’ve been without a darkroom for a while now, and will be for some time. (Yes, I wince as I write this.) But, I have my trusty scanner (assuming it survived) so I’ll still be shooting and developing film. And you can trust I’ll be building a darkroom as soon as I can! Nothing beats getting a beautiful print, fresh out of the wash, and holding it in your hands.

So what's next for Pictorial Planet?

Now I'm back in UK, I can give much more time to my website. I look forward to fulfilling my mission supporting more people and keeping alive the classic art of darkroom work and black and white photography. I’m looking forward to building out my blog and adding videos and a customer Q&A page.

My book and website exist so I can educate photographers. I bring 50 years of experience with this art and science and love to receive challenging questions that inspire me to keep learning more. My writing provides tips, methods and workflows in black and white photography and darkroom work. I hope, by ramping up this education through videos, blogs, newsletters and, eventually, workshops, I can inspire you and help you grow in the art. You’ll soon see it is all possible to do in the comfort of your own home, too. Follow me, as I develop films in my bathroom, build out my new darkroom, and database my images on my computer. I'll take you with me on shoots and challenge to build your own ability, wherever you are.

So, keep the “likes”, comments and emails coming. Now I’ve time to be your go-to person for all those black and white questions and I can't wait to help you achieve your pictorial dreams, too!

Thank you for your support,
